". . . las aguas de mi canto."

Photo by J.W.C. Adam (public domain)

Pablo Neruda's "Oda a la poesía" is beautiful, but the last ten lines are exquisite. They sum up exactly how I feel about Poetry. His play on the word "desarrollando" defies a faithful translation into English, yet it is the central idea of these lines.

Poesía
. . . contigo
mientras me fui gastando
tú continuaste
desarrollando tu frescura firme,
tu ímpetu cristalino,
como si el tiempo
que poco a poco me convierte en tierra
fuera a dejar corriendo eternamente
las aguas de mi canto.
